Founded on a pledge of medical care to all in need more than a century ago, Parkland's mandate is to furnish medical aid and hospital care to indigent and uninsured persons residing in Dallas County. It strives to keep the community healthy at its main hospital, at eleven Community Oriented Primary Care health centers and through countless outreach programs aimed at education and prevention. Annually, Parkland provides nearly $523 million in uncompensated care. Serving as the primary teaching hospital for UT Southwestern Medical Center, Parkland has trained more than 50 percent of the doctors in the Dallas area. It also has the distinction of having one of the busiest delivery units in the country.

The Project
Neonatal-Pediatric Pharmacy

Crystal Charity Ball funds will be used to build a neonatal-pediatric pharmacy in the new hospital opening in 2014. Adjoining the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a large and accessible space, the pharmacy will respond to the medication needs of all babies born at Parkland with a particular focus on newborns admitted to the NICU and children admitted to the Pediatric Burn Unit. In-house pharmacists specially trained in neonatal medications, dosing, and interactions will provide state-of-the-art care using innovative services which will allow for more accurate dosing and reduce medication errors. The new pharmacy will increase from 100 to 2,601 square feet to accommodate the growing needs for patient care. The Pharmacy will serve more than 16,000 children annually.
