For almost 100 years Children's Medical Center (CMC) has provided superior health care to children. The children who visit the hospital benefit from science-based medical care in a child-friendly, family-centered environment. Along with emotional and spiritual support, care is provided by a team of outstanding physicians, clinical staff, child life specialists, social workers, and volunteers. One of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the nation, CMC is the only academic healthcare facility in North Texas dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18. The Commmitment $997,212The Project High-Risk Asthma ProgramCrystal Charity Ball funds will be used over a two-year period to establish a new coordinated, comprehensive high-risk asthma program which will address the complicated healthcare needs of children who suffer from severe asthma. Asthma is the leading admitting diagnosis at CMC and affects tens of thousands of children annually in Dallas County, particularly minority children living in poverty. It results in recurrent episodes of shortness of breath, long-term breathing problems, missed school days, emergency room visits, hospitalizations and even death. In addition to supporting the development and initial operation of a high-risk asthma specialty clinic at CMC, this funding will also support scientific research at the new Children's Pediatric Research Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center. The new asthma program will serve 1,400 children over 2 years.
